Wakefield 25th Anniversary
Report by Jeremy Morris. Photos by Rob Jardine
There was a good number of VSCCA members at this year’s Wakefield Park All-Historic Racing, despite the usual difficulties presented by the clash with Father’s Day. VSCCA members who were on the track included:
Rees Mackay Riley
Ben Powell Riley RMB
John Murn Decca Major
Christopher Morris Alvis 12/50
Todd Barker GN Sports
Jeremy Morris Frazer Nash
Stephen Figgis Riley IMP
Kent Patrick Bugatti Type 37A (sharing with son Nicholas)
Les Craft MG TC
Ashley Caldecott MG TC
Dan Elbourne Triumph Super Seven
Robert Phillips MG TC
John Lackey MG TA
Although not (yet) a member, Stirling Mackay entered one of his father’s Rileys. Brian Parkinson had entered his Wolseley Hornet Special but I did not see him on the day.
VSCCA members seen in the pits were Brian Wilson, Steve Morley and family, Jack Pappas (ACT), Cliff King, Sean Sherry, Tony Strachan, Rob Jardine, Malcolm Knight and his son James, Jock Granger and Richard Lamrock. Forgive me if I missed anyone.
VSCCA friends included Rob Rowe, John Medley, Neil Murdoch (MG TB) (Victoria), Grant Cowie and Steve Barnett (Cooper MK IX) (Victoria), Mark Burns (who left Melbourne in his Alvis 12/50 on Friday and arrived at Goulburn before 3:00 pm), Phil Speer (with his MG TC driven by Petr Lubrano), Steven Denner (Cooper MKV – Victoria) and the Snape family – Matt Snape (the Amilcar Willys), Greg Snape (in the BMW Cooper MK 10) and Graeme Snape and Robin in the pits.
The weather was fine and there was some real racing had by all. This is an event that needs support both for competitors and spectators so if you have a project in the shed, set next year as a target for the first “shake down run”. Speed is not a necessity in regularity and there were a number of slower cars tussling with each other. But they all got faster over the weekend in practice I would lap them three or four times. By the final race, only twice!
And the winners were ….
Todd Barker won the beauty competition
Ben Powell won a race and came second in another
I, Jeremy Morris, won a first and second in regularity, which has never happened before, and is unlikely to occur again.
Mark Burns won the spirit of the event award. He spent four days in a row in his Alvis.
