Thank you to Julie and Royce for organising the annual George Green Rally for 2022.
It was fabulous to be out exploring New South Wales and with great company too. The fact that Julie and Royce worked hard and organised this all for us, is a huge gift to us all. We are very grateful. I for one, was thrilled that I did not have to think about a single meal or make a decision as to what was coming next.
The beauty of the countryside rolled by, the splendour of the attending vehicles inspired and the marvellous community members we met along the way, broadened our experiences.
We set off from Berrima where some of the group assembled. On to Goulburn for a wonderful meal and incredibly comfortable accommodation. The next day we set off to Crookwell and went to an alpaca farm. We heard many interesting facts about these gentle creatures. Our daughter and others thoroughly enjoyed feeding them as they warmed up to the people. A coffee cart sustained the group. A beautiful, bumpy road to Boorowa where a lunch of salads was very welcome. We discovered that our Delage crank handle had been lost along the way. As we all realised something untoward had happened and noted the location, the return to the estimated spot yielded a profitable result.
Our arrival in Cowra, the congenial happy hour was most welcome. Again the Delage was problematic. The potholes had dislodged her rear end so she was to enjoy a day of rest in a local workshop in Cowra.
We headed off to Canowindra. A sumptuous morning tea was laid on and we enjoyed a tour of the Fishes Museum and a quick exploration of a delightful town.
The next stop was the Eugowra showground where obedient and agile sheepdogs displayed their skills. Far more efficient than teenagers in gathering sheep! On to Eugowra for a warming soup lunch, decadent scones and Bushranger theatrics. After lunch, we explored the many murals, the craft shop and a poetry recital. We returned to Cowra where the Delage was still recuperating. She was then taken to a maritime mechanic who generously allowed Eric full use of his workshop and tools. He did this out of pure generosity and we are very grateful. The Delage fully recovered! Dinner at Cowra golf club was hearty and satisfying. The shuttle bus was most welcome.
Thursday saw a trip to Forbes via Grenfell. A generous morning tea put on by the Lions Club at the old railway station and an impressive gathering of cars and people, all enjoyed the ambience. Some of us ducked away quickly to visit a local shop that had opened especially for the visiting rally.
I had been to the Forbes Motor Museum decades ago, but it was impressively updated in the number of cars on display and the venue’s facilities. The Japanese hearse was impressive indeed. I am sure others would have their favourite to mention in the museum. An incredibly generous lunch was then enjoyed at the Forbes golf club and we meandered back to Cowra. The meal at The Quarry Restaurant, Cowra was of a very high standard. Excellent local wines and delicious food.
Friday saw a morning of reflection as we visited the POW areas. Then onto the Japanese Gardens which were stunning. We enjoyed a gentle exploration of these gardens. A stunning drive to Wyangala Dam for a BBQ lunch kindly put on by the local fishing club followed. They worked hard to give us a lovely meal.
That evening, a coach took us back to Canowindra where we were treated to an extravaganza. Buffet dinner, glitter and glamour, entertainment and cabaret. Great fun, talent and ‘ritz’ was the theme of the evening. Who needs Broadway?
We had the most varied week, with so many unique experiences. We thank Julie and Royce sincerely for all their efforts in organising all of this, the annual George Green Rally for 2022. We thank all of those who attended for welcoming us on this trip and for making the time even richer with their company, generosity and conversation.
